Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine hosts beam signing with The Weitz Company

Beam will be placed within the new Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) opening on campus in 2023

Ames, IA – The Weitz Company came together with the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine to host a beam signing and ice cream social on October 20th, 2021. The beam will be placed in the new Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory currently under construction.

Approximately 150 people were in attendance including students, faculty, donors, staff, alumni, field workers, design partners, Iowa leadership, and distinguished vet med personnel. Attendees enjoyed ice cream from the Iowa State University Creamery, while Dan Grooms, Dr. Stephen G. Juelsgaard Dean of Veterinary Medicine, thanked donors, partners, and vet med faculty for making the new VDL possible.

Weitz Project Manager, Dan Solem, also provided updates on the project and thanked the design-build team and field staff for their hard work on the project thus far.

Partners for this project include Strang, Baker Group, Raker Rhodes Engineering, and Nilles Associates.

The new VDL will provide essential infrastructure for sample receiving and processing, pathology, bacteriology, necropsy, histopathology and include an incinerator. The new construction will improve efficiency and effectiveness of the process flow while addressing critical issues of space quantity and quality and provide the necessary biosafety and biocontainment. The two-story, 94,000 SF project is set to complete in 2023 and will include specialized laboratory spaces with a flexible layout concept.
