Des Moines International Airport Terminal Project Reaches Key Milestones as Construction Progresses 

The Des Moines International Airport’s new terminal project continues to advance on schedule as part of its $390 million transformation, with several major areas now entering the final stages of construction. 

Phase 1A Nearing Completion 

Work in the Phase 1A concourse area, which includes Gates 7 through 11, is rapidly taking shape. Final ceiling installations are underway, new equipment is being installed, temporary protections are being removed, and crews have begun final cleaning activities as the space transitions from construction to completion. 

Phase 1A Apron Level has also seen significant progress. Terrazzo flooring installations are complete, ticketing counters are being installed, and new airline operations spaces are taking form. Throughout the area, finishing touches are bringing the future passenger experience into clear view. 

Behind the scenes, the airport’s modernized central utility plant is coming online. New heating and cooling systems are being started up and carefully tuned to ensure optimal performance. Testing and commissioning activities are increasing daily as teams prepare the facility for operation. 

The new baggage handling system has also reached an important milestone. Conveyors are operational, carousels are turning, and system testing is actively underway. Passenger boarding bridges are scheduled to arrive in early September, with installation being coordinated alongside ongoing apron improvement projects. 

Owner training and comprehensive system testing have begun and will continue through the fall and winter as the project team prepares for the terminal transition planned for January 2027. 

Phase 1B Moving Forward 

Construction of Phase 1B West, which includes Gates 5 and 6, is progressing steadily. Above-ceiling work is nearing completion while wall finishing, painting, and other interior activities continue throughout the space. This area is expected to be completed alongside Phase 1A later this year, allowing both sections to be incorporated into operational training scenarios. 

To the east, Phase 1B construction at Gates 1 through 4 is gaining momentum. Underground utility installations and foundation work are currently underway and will continue into the fall. Superstructure construction is scheduled throughout fall and winter 2026, extending into spring 2027. Interior buildout and finishing work will follow, carrying the project through 2027 and into mid-2028. 

Looking Ahead 

With major systems beginning operation, finishes nearing completion, and training activities underway, the Des Moines International Airport‘s new terminal is moving closer to a significant milestone. The progress achieved across all phases continues to reflect the collaborative effort of project partners working toward delivering a modern, efficient, and welcoming gateway for Central Iowa.
