Preconstruction and Supply Chain Wins at the Kravis Center Expansion

The Kravis Center for the Performing Arts is a staple of Palm Beach County’s cultural and entertainment scene, welcoming audiences of all age’s year round. Weitz was proud to be part of the 2018 Kravis Center Expansion, a fast track, design build project that demanded a highly coordinated approach. Success relied on the strength of Weitz’s preconstruction and supply chain expertise, both of which were critical to meeting the project’s accelerated schedule and complex demands.

Fast-Track Scheduling

To achieve the 20-month schedule, which included both design and construction, the project followed a fast-track progressive design build strategy. Preconstruction encompassed design coordination, budgeting, early procurement, and permitting, all while construction activities were advancing. The project consisted of 12 phases, each with separate design documents. This approach allowed the design team to focus first on the longest construction components, ensuring resources were directed to critical path items without being delayed by less critical design tasks.

Leveraging In-House Supply Chain Resources

Weitz’s supply chain team, Spire Solutions LLC, played a critical role throughout preconstruction, particularly in the design and procurement of the custom lighting package. This scope included exterior theatrical style LED accent and tree lighting, custom site lighting, integrated handrail lighting, and one-off custom fabricated six-foot-tall column fixtures designed to match the existing 30-year-old units. Early coordination and procurement were essential to maintaining the project schedule while meeting the architectural and performance requirements of the facility, while also ensuring the final result aligned with the owner’s vision and expectations.

Lighting controls were carefully coordinated to allow the theater lighting control board to customize exterior lighting themes through a DMX integrated controller. The result is a striking, flexible lighting display that not only meets technical requirements, but delivers exactly what the owner envisioned, enhancing the Kravis Center experience for every performance, event, and occasion.

Through disciplined preconstruction planning, phased execution, and strategic supply chain coordination, Weitz delivered a complex expansion on an accelerated timeline without compromising quality or vision. Today, the enhanced Kravis Center for the Performing Arts stands as a testament to collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to elevating the cultural experience for Palm Beach County.
