Weitz Receives ABC National Excellence in Construction Award for Second Consecutive Year
DES MOINES, Iowa – For the second consecutive year, The Weitz Company received an Excellence in Construction Pyramid Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors.
The honor, awarded during the 28th Annual ABC Excellence in Construction Awards Gala on March 21, was in recognition of the design-build, Lortscher Animal Nutrition industrial project completed in October 2016.
Built in Brownwood, Texas, Lortscher Animal Nutrition and Weitz developed a relationship that centered around communication and accountability, which ultimately created a mutual trust and teamwork that enabled the completion of a successful project. This was especially important since it was the first pet food pre-mix and blending facility designed by Weitz Professional Services, and Lortscher was transparent from the beginning that it would be making project design revisions until the day all trades demobilized from the jobsite.
The project team worked collectively to manage the changes, tracking all requests and costs through project management software and providing Lortscher with Monthly Project Status Reports to keep the client informed to all costs and fees associated with modifying the scope of work.
A Pyramid Award winner in 2017 for its construction of the Ozark Mountain Poultry feed mill, Weitz self-performed all steel erection, metal building erection, millwright, pneumatics installation and painting at Lortscher Animal Nutrition, which enhanced its merit for this year’s award.
Judged by a panel of industry experts, the Excellence in Construction awards program honors both general and specialty contractors for innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects. All construction team members are recognized, including the contractor, owner, architect and engineer. Winning projects were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost.
