Steve McClure: Celebrating 20 Years at The Weitz Company
This year marks a major milestone for Steve McClure as he celebrates 20 years with The Weitz Company. What began as a simple opportunity through a friend has turned into a remarkable career. Over the years, Steve has not only grown in his professional skills but has also played a key role in advancing the company’s IT capabilities and enterprise approach.
From Auto Mechanic to IT Leader
Steve, originally an auto mechanic, found himself drawn to IT because he wanted to work in a field where he could see tangible results. Thanks to a school friend interning at Weitz who mentioned a recent opening; Steve applied and joined the company in the off chance of finding a new career. Since then, Steve has grown tremendously during his time here. He’s held a variety of roles, from intern to regional IT manager, and now serves in a senior leadership position at our company’s IT Director. Along the way, he’s both witnessed and led significant organizational change.
One of Steve’s proudest accomplishments has been helping evolve the IT department into the integrated business model and support structure it is today. He explains that Weitz transitioned from operating as small, largely independent offices to embracing a unified, companywide strategy, allowing projects and offices nationwide to be supported with the same resources and assistance.
Leading Transformative Projects
Steve also played a pivotal role in one of Weitz’s most transformative projects: the implementation of Procore. Collaborating with a focused, cross-functional team spanning IT, Operations, and Operations Excellence (OPEX), this project fundamentally changed how Weitz builds and collaborates across the board.
In terms of company culture, Steve has seen a shift from isolated “little companies” to a unified enterprise that still values personal connections. He’s also seen safety evolve, from a field-tracked metric to a core principle that now extends into office environments and technology practices.
Words of Wisdom
When asked what advice he’d offer to newcomers, Steve says, “Don’t judge any task at face value. You never know where it might lead. Bring your best to everything, it’s how you stay part of the conversation when the next opportunity comes.”
Congratulations, Steve, on 20 incredible years. Your leadership and dedication has helped shape the success and legacy of Weitz.
