People Powering Innovation: From Data to Decisions with Power BI

June 4, 2026  /  Blog,

At Weitz, innovation starts with people who look for better ways to solve problems and support their teams. Across the company, employees continue to find smarter and more efficient ways to improve how work gets done every day. Through creativity, initiative, and continuous learning, teams help drive better results across projects and operations.

Turning Data Into Opportunity

For Mohamed El Dawy, innovation came through data and technology. Working as a Project Controls Director, Mohamed saw an opportunity to improve how teams track, analyze, present, and understand important project information. Rather than relying on disconnected spreadsheets, static reports, and manual data review, he began working on a more centralized and visual way to bring project information together.

His approach started with the information teams already depend on every day, including schedule, cost, quality, risk, and project performance data. Mohamed worked to connect and organize this information through Power BI dashboards that make complex project data easier to access, review, and understand. These dashboards help turn detailed project controls information into clear visuals that support faster reviews, better communication, and more informed decision-making.

From Self-Learning to Scalable Impact

What makes Mohamed’s work especially meaningful is that he taught himself Power BI through self-learning, hands-on testing, and practical application. He did not approach the dashboards as a simple reporting exercise. Instead, he focused on understanding the underlying data, identifying where information was inconsistent or difficult to access, and building tools that could help operations teams see the bigger picture.

The result is a set of dashboards that gives teams a more efficient way to view important information in one place. Instead of spending time searching through separate spreadsheets, schedule files, reports, or systems, teams can use interactive dashboards to quickly review project status, identify trends, and understand areas that may need attention. This improves visibility across projects and creates more consistency in how information is reviewed and communicated.

The dashboards also support better project controls practices by making schedule health, cost performance, quality trends, risk items, and other key project indicators easier to monitor. By presenting the data in a more organized and visual format, Mohamed’s work helps teams move from simply collecting information to actively using it to manage project performance.

Connecting Planning and Performance

Alongside these dashboards, Mohamed developed a tool to streamline the Weekly Work Plan (WWP) process. This tool helps align field progress with the master schedule, improving communication between teams and ensuring real-time visibility. This data feeds directly into the dashboards, creating a connected cycle that enhances both the planning process and operational decision-making.

“Innovation is about finding better ways to make information useful and accessible for the people who rely on it every day.”

Building A Better Way

Beyond the dashboards themselves, Mohamed’s initiative reflects the mindset that drives innovation at Weitz. He identified a challenge, learned a new skill on his own, and created solutions that will support the team long term.

At Weitz, people like Mohamed continue Building a Better Way by finding practical solutions that improve everyday work.
