Mike Tousley: 40 Years of Leadership and Impact at The Weitz Company
The Weitz Company strives to celebrate not just the projects they build but the people who make it possible. This year, Weitz is proud to recognize and celebrate Mike Tousley, Executive Vice President & General Manager, for reaching an incredible milestone—40 years of leadership, dedication, and impact within the company. Mike’s journey is a testament to hard work and the power of investing in people.
Mike’s connection to construction began long before he joined Weitz. Growing up working alongside his father doing a variety of commercial and senior living projects, he developed a deep appreciation for the industry. That passion led him to Weitz, where his first project in Delray Beach, Florida, set the stage for a career dedicated to building a better way. Though he briefly left to work with his father again early in his career, Mike returned to Weitz’s Iowa office, drawn back by the people and opportunity to push beyond his comfort zone.
“I’ve had the privilege of working with tremendous people who have guided, coached, and challenged me. That’s what has kept me here all these years.,” Mike shares.
Leading Transformational Projects
Throughout his career, Mike has played a critical role in some of company’s most transformative projects. Two stand out in particular: the company’s first data center in Des Moines, which paved the way for Weitz’s national expansion in the sector over recent years; and the Kansas City International Airport New Terminal project, which launched the company’s aviation business unit, which now operates nationally.
“It’s incredible to see how those initial projects evolved into entire business units,” Mike reflects. “Having seen Iowa people embrace those challenges and opportunities and to witness their continued growth and success in expanding these product lines across the country is something I’m incredibly proud of.”
A Culture of Growth and Possibilities
Looking ahead, Mike believes that Weitz’s culture will be the driving force behind its continued success. “We have an incredible culture that has stood the test of time and a group of people who support one another, challenge each other to improve, and truly care about the work we do. That’s what makes this company special.”
He emphasizes that retaining and attracting top talent isn’t just about competitive opportunities—it’s about fostering an environment where people want to stay. “When people feel valued, when they see a future for themselves here, that’s when they do their best work. It’s our responsibility as leaders to nurture that kind of culture.”
Mike Tousley’s contributions have left an undeniable mark on Weitz and so many of the communities he has built throughout his tenure. His leadership and commitment to excellence continues to shape the company, and Weitz is excited to see what the future has in store.
Congratulations, Mike, on an extraordinary 40 years and many more ahead!
