The Weitz Company is proud to support programs that invest in the next generation of leaders. Recently, Senior Inclusion Associate, Shekinah Fountain, represented Weitz as a panelist at a YouthWorks discussion in Des Moines, Iowa, where she shared real-world insights and career guidance with local high school students preparing for life after graduation.

The panel exposed students to a variety of career paths, practical workplace experiences, and honest advice about navigating early career decisions. Shekinah spoke about the value of exploring interests, building confidence, and remaining open to opportunities that may not follow a traditional path.

“You do not need to have everything figured out right away. What matters most is being willing to learn, ask questions, and take advantage of opportunities that help you grow, both personally and professionally.”

YouthWorks is the only year-long high school internship program in Central Iowa. The program offers a transformative experience that combines classroom learning, career training, and a paid internship. Through hands-on work, mentorship, and real-world exposure, students gain the tools they need to succeed beyond high school, whether they pursue college, enter the workforce, launch a business, or take time to explore what is next.

Local businesses play a key role by providing meaningful experiences beyond a typical part-time job. Each student matches with a mentor who offers guidance, encouragement, and insight into the professional world. Through YouthWorks, students gain purpose, confidence, and a clearer path forward while strengthening the community as a whole.
