Innovative Baggage Handling Solutions: Insights from the IABSC Annual BHS Summit

The Weitz Company’s Aviation team attended the International Association of Baggage System Companies (IABSC) 2026 Annual BHS Summit. The summit took place from January 27-28^th in Grapevine, Texas at the Embassy Suites DFW North Airport Hotel.

Representing Weitz at the conference were Project Executives, Patrick Marino and Mark Zessin; Executive Vice President, Chris Harrison; and Business Development Director, Mina Wassef.

A strong theme throughout the IABSC conference was the growing demand for solution-based builders who can actively drive quality, innovation, and cost control. Conversations with airlines reinforced this need, highlighting the importance of BHS solutions that improve reliability without disrupting day-to-day operations. As projects grow more complex and budgets face increased scrutiny, an integrated, problem-solving approach is more essential than ever.

Sustainability was another key area of focus among attendees. On day two of the conference, Weitz Project Executive, Mark Zessin moderated a breakout session titled Baggage With A Conscience: Sustainable Innovations In Handling Systems. Alongside Peter Ellerhorst of Crown Plastics and Ryan Romero of Sumitomo Drive Technologies, Mark led a discussion on enhancing existing BHS infrastructure to help airlines mitigate immediate full system replacement as another avenue for development. The session provided insight into different solutions that extend system life, improve energy efficiency, and reduce long-term maintenance costs.

Across nearly every discussion, attendees also emphasized the need to drive productivity within BHS solutions. Smarter system design, improved controls, and more efficient construction strategies are essential to meeting the operational demands of today’s airports.
