In The News: Fueling the Future of Aviation Projects in Iowa

September 22, 2025  /  Blog, Media,

A recent Engineering News-Record article highlighted the $445-million Des Moines International Airport expansion and how early collaboration was transformative to the overall success of the project.

With funding secured, what began as a five-gate expansion grew to six gates and a new parking garage using the Construction Manager At-Risk (CMAR) method, bringing budget certainty and efficiency to one of the Midwest’s fastest-growing regions. The garage is already open, and the Weitz | Turner team expects the new gates to be completed by January 2027.

“Having CMAR available to us as a public entity in Iowa was huge, because otherwise we would have had to do everything low bid in the design-bid-build process. We would have had to design the whole thing 100%, and we likely would have had change orders,” Brian Mulcahy, Executive Director, Des Moines Airport Authority says. “From my perspective, CMAR allowed us to select the team, the construction team, and then get our design team involved early.”
