Enabling Work Begins on Mesa Gateway Airport’s In-Line Checked Baggage Improvements Project

December 10, 2025  /  Blog,

The Weitz Company is excited to share that enabling work officially began in November 2025 on the Mesa Gateway Airport In-Line Checked Baggage Improvements Project in Mesa, Arizona. Working in our partnership with the Mesa Gateway Airport Authority, we are modernizing critical airport infrastructure, supporting long-term growth, and elevating the traveler experience.

Laying the Groundwork for a Major Upgrade

The enabling phase focuses on preparing the site, adjusting utilities, and sequencing operational adjustments to ensure airport activity continues safely and efficiently. This early work is essential to setting up the project for success and allowing future phases to proceed with minimal disruption to travelers, airport staff, and terminal operations.

Once the enabling work is complete, Weitz will begin construction on a new 14,000 square-foot building that will house state-of-the-art baggage screening conveyor systems, as well as a remodel of a section of the airport’s ticketing lobby. These integrated systems will significantly expand the airport’s checked baggage capabilities, increasing throughput from 200 bags per hour to an impressive 800 bags per hour.

Our Role as General Contractor

As the general contractor, Weitz is leading the planning, sequencing, and execution of this complex, multi-phase project within an active aviation environment. This includes:

  • Phased construction planning to maintain full airport operations during each work stage
  • Coordination with airport stakeholders, TSA, and design partners to ensure seamless integration of new systems
  • Implementation of Aviation safety and security protocols
  • Quality control and systems commissioning to ensure reliable and efficient baggage handling performance

From site preparation to conveyor integration, our team is focused on collaboration, proactive communication, and minimizing operational impacts throughout the project.

Building for the Future and a Better Traveler Experience

The new in-line checked baggage system will modernize processing, reduce manual handling, and improve overall flow within the terminal. Travelers will benefit from:

  • Faster, more efficient checked baggage processing
  • Reduced congestion at ticketing counters
  • Improved system reliability and accuracy
  • A smoother start and finish to every journey

Airport staff will see improved working conditions and increased flexibility to accommodate passenger growth in the years to come.

The project is scheduled for completion at the end of 2027, equipping Mesa Gateway Airport’s for enhanced operations and future expansion. These improvements will strengthen the airport’s capacity, support regional economic development, and elevate the overall passenger experience.

Congratulations to our Weitz Aviation team on this exciting kick off!
