Building a Better Way for Hyperscale Data Centers

June 15, 2026  /  Blog,

Hyperscale data centers are driving significant growth across the construction industry today. These projects require skilled laborers, specialized equipment, and the ability to construct them properly, a significant undertaking, even for experienced contractors.

One of the largest hurdles is workforce readiness. Many individuals step onto a data center project having never worked in the mission critical space before. They are introduced to unfamiliar terminology, client-specific processes, as well as unfamiliar operational standards.

To help teams navigate these challenges while supporting the rapid growth of hyperscale development, Weitz created a unique resource: the Mission Critical Playbook.

Built from Experience

The Playbook originated from Weitz’s first hyperscale data center project in the Des Moines area as a simple collection of lessons learned, quality standards, and best practices.

“If we were going to do it, we were going to do it right,” said Fred Cook, Field Operations Manager.

The commitment to delivering consistent, high-quality work while creating a reliable knowledge resource for employees laid the groundwork for what would become a defining tool within the Mission Critical business unit

What began as a foundational document evolved into a comprehensive resource covering every phase of construction, from preconstruction planning to project closeout and handover.

A Living Resource for Growth and Development

Today, the Playbook serves as a living document designed to support training, development, and growth within the business unit.

“It takes some of the best things that we do and incorporates them into new teams,” said Senior Project Manager, Zach Smith.

By creating a standardized framework for project execution, Weitz helps ensure employees have access to the information and resources they need to perform at a high level.

Developing Future Leaders

Today, leaders within the Mission Critical business unit are using it as a development tool to help prepare employees for expanded responsibilities and future leadership opportunities. This broader exposure helps emerging leaders gain a more complete understanding of hyperscale data center construction and strengthens collaboration across teams.

Creating Alignment Across Teams and Partners

“We would love to share it with our trade partners and bring more people under the umbrella,” said Project Manager, Mattea Ketelsen.

Expanding the Playbook’s reach could help establish shared expectations, common terminology, and aligned standards, strengthening collaboration while supporting successful project delivery.

Building a Better Way Forward

The Mission Critical Playbook has become an essential resource for Weitz, supporting everything from employee development to field execution and operational consistency.

As hyperscale development continues to expand, the Playbook reflects Weitz’s commitment to building smarter, sharing knowledge, and continuously improving how teams deliver complex projects – Building a Better Way.
