Andy Gardner: Building Projects, People, and Legacy in Iowa for 25 Years
Twenty-five years ago, Andy Gardner took a step that would shape the course of his career. That step led him to The Weitz Company, where he found the opportunity to grow, learn, and take on challenges that would define him as a leader. Since joining Weitz in 2000, Andy has steadily advanced into his current role as Preconstruction Director for our Iowa Commercial team, dedicating the last 25 years to building projects that matter and mentoring the next generation of builders along the way.
Early Experiences
Andy began his career working on smaller projects before quickly being entrusted with a major opportunity for The Weitz Company, the Iowa Events Center. At $100 million, it was significantly larger than any project he had tackled before. The project became a tremendous success for both the company and the city of Des Moines, and it remains Andy’s favorite project to this day. He says the lessons he learned during that time have stayed with him throughout his career.
Defining Achievements
Andy describes working on the Iowa Events Center as a defining moment in his career. It was his first time working on a joint venture, and the experience taught him not only about how Weitz operates but also about how he collaborates with others to move a project forward.
He also points to the Prairie Meadows Casino project as another transformative experience. This project presented challenges that pushed him to grow and navigate complex situations, ultimately shaping the leader he is today.
The Next Generation
Andy’s advice for the next generation is simple, to always ask for more. Get your work done, then look for the next opportunity to step in and help. This mindset not only shows initiative but helps you build your skills faster.
Time management is key. Learn to prioritize your tasks so you can handle what’s in front of you while staying ready for what’s next.
Above all, Andy encourages young professionals to go the extra mile in everything they do. It’s often the extra effort that sets you apart and opens doors to bigger opportunities down the road.
“When I started at Weitz, I didn’t know anyone, and my first project was much bigger than any other I had ever worked on. I quickly saw the opportunities here and the kind of people I was surrounded by, and that’s what has kept me at Weitz for 25 years. With the industry constantly changing and projects always bringing new challenges, the culture at Weitz has made me want to stay and keep moving forward.”
