Building Responsibility /

Driving Sustainable Stewardship Across Construction

At Weitz, sustainability is a core principle guiding how we operate as a company. As a national construction leader, we are committed to minimizing our environmental impact, promoting resource efficiency, and fostering responsible business practices across all aspects of our operations. Our corporate sustainability approach emphasizes integrating environmentally responsible practices into company policies, procurement, and operational decision-making.

Through these efforts, Weitz is dedicated to building a resilient, responsible company that not only delivers value to clients and communities but also models leadership in sustainable business practices across the construction industry.

Preconstruction Sustainability Planning & Cost Analysis

By engaging early during preconstruction, Weitz works with project teams to evaluate sustainable construction strategies before work begins. This early planning approach allows us to balance upfront investment with long-term operational performance, ensuring sustainability goals align with project budgets, schedules, and lifecycle costs.

Sustainable Material Sourcing & Supply Chain Coordination

We collaborate closely with suppliers and leverage our national supply chain network to identify certified sustainable materials that meet performance, cost, and availability requirements. This coordinated approach supports responsible sourcing while maintaining schedule certainty and quality standards.

Waste Reduction & Resource Efficiency Strategies

From early planning through construction, our teams implement waste reduction and resource efficiency strategies that minimize environmental impact. Through careful material management, recycling initiatives, and responsible construction practices, we help projects achieve measurable sustainability outcomes.

Energy-Efficient System Evaluation & Constructability Review

Our teams evaluate energy-efficient building systems with a focus on constructability, performance, and long-term efficiency. By applying our constructability review process during design and preconstruction, we help ensure sustainable systems are integrated effectively and function as intended.

Collaboration with Design & Engineering Partners to Integrate Sustainable Solutions

Weitz collaborates closely with owners, architects, engineers, and trade partners to integrate sustainable solutions throughout the building lifecycle. This team-based approach ensures sustainability strategies are achievable, measurable, and aligned with overall project goals.

Companywide Sustainability Practices

Weitz implements a variety of sustainability practices across our company to serve as an industry example of how sustainability matters both on and off the jobsite. These practices include implementing digital databases, improving energy efficiency in our office spaces, conducting safety and sustainability workshops and trainings as part of employee education, and continuously seeking new ways to grow our company with sustainability at the forefront.

Sustainable Construction in Practice

Wellmark Headquarters

LEED Platinum

The Wellmark Headquarters stands as one of the most prominent sustainable office buildings in Iowa. At the time of completion, it was the largest commercial office building in the world to earn LEED Platinum certification, with all proposed points accepted. The project incorporates advanced water-efficiency strategies that save nearly 2.4 million gallons of drinking water annually, along with extensive material recycling and reuse efforts that reduced construction waste and environmental impact.

Kansas City International Airport – New Single Terminal

LEED Gold

The Kansas City International Airport New Single Terminal achieved a major milestone in sustainable aviation construction by earning LEED Gold certification. As the second airport in the United States, and the largest, to reach this level, the project demonstrates Weitz’s commitment to sustainable construction practices. During construction, 85% of demolition waste was diverted from landfills, and rigorous indoor air quality controls were implemented to protect long-term building performance.
