Central College Vermeer Science Center

Pella, IA

This building constructed by Weitz serves as an educational research facility consisting of 55,000 square feet of new construction and a 28,000 square foot renovation to the existing building. The new addition was built while the existing facility remained occupied. The Solar System is a 5.4 kW array consisting of 90 Solarex MSX60 panels. It has 4.0 kW derated design output.

The 4-kW array is used to power a demonstration fountain located outside the building’s main entrance. A standard 3Hp pump, when fully loaded, pumps seven fountain jets, originating close to the building, to gradually change the flow characteristics of the arcing sprays in both height and length. These “arcing tubes of water” are directed toward a bench located at the base of a sloping granite paver surface, allowing users to cool their feet if desired. This was the first LEED rated building in the State of Iowa. It achieved LEED Silver Certification.
